The following contains the names of the members of the 1978 South Carolina Gamecocks men's soccer team and the results of each match. The Gamecocks' 1978 season marked the first year that the University ever fielded a varsity men's soccer team. This first squad was composed primarily of transfer athletes from small schools and junior colleges around the nation. Brian Winstead was the first of these players to sign a letter of intent to play with the Gamecocks. The 1978 team set the bar very high in its first season, going 13-3-1 and outscoring their opponents with a margin of 57 goals to 12. Despite a stellar record, the team did not earn an NCAA bid in their first season.
